Artist Statement

As I expand my horizons in shape and form, I thought it would be interesting to try some different types of forms this trimester due to distance learning. This specific project gave me the chance to work with creating a 3D piece out of paper. I really wanted to create a vase that later I could create out of clay. Contrasting usual vases, it has two faces connected with thin strips on the sides. This vase would be created out of slabs similar to the paper that was used to make this mock up. I created a single vase, it is decorated with primary colored lines all over the form. I used a mix of thicknesses for the lines, creating uneven intersecting lines to make a sort of geometric pattern. Tying the piece together is the use of primary colors, letting the color highlight the vase form and show the contrast between the paper and the lines.

This piece plays with the elements of Line and Form brought out by the diagonal lines running in different directions up the piece - contrasting between colorful lines and blank paper around the shape of the vessels body. The Pattern and Repetition of the lines are brought out using those same lines on all surfaces of the vase, making it a focal point of the eye.

This project allowed me to learn how to use other mediums to plan projects in the future when I can work with clay again. This allows for me to have a plan going into future projects. I have seen how I can still create my art through other means, using paper to bring the project to life and make it 3D. While I am used to using clay for my art I have seen how I can still have a creative outlet. Now I have more project ideas that I can’t wait to use once I’m back in the studio!

The process was as follows:

  - Gather materials, a blank piece of paper, pencil, markers, tape, and scissors
  - Trace out the shape of the vase
  - Cut out the shapes
  - Cut out strips to attach the faces of the vase together
  - Use yellow, red, and blue fine tip markers to create thin lines across faces of the vase
  - Line pieces up and tape them together
  - Make sure all pieces have been attached

  - Make final touch-ups
