Artist Statement
As I expand my horizons in shape and form, I thought it would be interesting to try some different types of forms this trimester due to distance learning. This specific project gave me the chance to work with creating a 3D piece out of cardboard and plastic. I really wanted to create a sculpture that later I could hang in my home. Contrasting usual sculptures, it has two wings decorated with thin strips of plastic. This sculpture was larger scale than most other projects I have made. I created a single rectangle out of cardboard, it is decorated with colored splotches all over the form. I used a mix of thicknesses for the colors, creating uneven patterns of color to make a sort of flowing pattern. Tying the piece together is the use of plastic, letting the plastic highlight the wings on the form to show the contrast between the cardboard and the wings.
This piece plays with the elements of Line and Form brought out by the uneven lines created by the contrast between colors which run in different directions up the piece - contrasting between colorful background and white wings. The Pattern and Repetition of the colors are brought out using those same colors on the whole surface of the sculpture and allowing for the wings to pop, making it a focal point of the eye.
This project allowed me to learn how to use other mediums to let out my creativity. I have learned how to use found objects to create art and allowed me to broaden my horizons. I have seen how I can still create my art through other means, using cardboard and plastic to bring the project to life and make it 3D. While I am used to using clay for my art I have seen how I can still have a creative outlet. Now I have more project ideas that I can’t wait to use!
